Kurakakaul Abattoir in the Rabaul District of East New Britain Province was once a productive livestock station but has fallen into decline. As part of the government’s livestock revitalization strategy, efforts are now underway to restore the facility and enhance its role in modern livestock production, contributing to improved national food security.
The rehabilitation project involves rebuilding ranch infrastructure, upgrading the abattoir, and installing meat-processing systems. A partnership between the Livestock Development Corporation (LDC) and the Rabaul District Investment Corporation Ltd (RDICL) has been formed, with LDC offering technical support and assisting with land acquisition.
While processing capacity details remain undisclosed, the modernized abattoir will cater to multiple livestock species and function as a central buying point for local farmers. This will strengthen market access, support structured supply chains, and stimulate local economies. Ultimately, the project aims to generate employment and re-establish Kurakakaul as a significant contributor to Papua New Guinea’s livestock industry revival.
