Sagalau Cattle Farm

Sagalau Cattle Farm, located in Madang Province, was originally established by the Department of Agriculture, Stock and Fisheries (DASF) and served as a hub for cattle production and buffalo training during the 1960s. It was operated as a buying point for smallholder livestock farmers from all the districts in Madang Province. However, years of neglect and lack of funding led to its decline until the property was handed over to the Livestock Development Corporation (LDC) in 2012.

Under the Prime Minister Marape’s livestock revitalization agenda, LDC has partnered with the Madang Provincial Government and Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) to implement the Cattle Under Coconuts Integration Project, which utilizes existing coconut plantations for cattle grazing. This initiative aligns with national development goals in the MTDP III 2018-2022 and MTDP IV 2023-2027 under the National Cattle Breeding Program. Due to its limited grazing paddocks, the station holds 90 herds of cattle and x number of horses. Improved pasture species such as signal grass has been introduced there to minimize over grazing.

Plans are underway to rehabilitate the old abattoir to process cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep, creating opportunities for downstream processing. Madang is considered ideal for livestock production due to its abundant supplementary feed sources such as copra meal, fish meal, palm kernel expeller, and molasses. The redevelopment of Sagalau ranch aims to enhance food security, reduce meat imports, and generate employment, while promoting sustainable livestock farming in the region.
