Zuguru Cattle Ranch
Zuguru Cattle Ranch
Zuguru Cattle Ranch, located in the Unggai-Bena District of Eastern Highlands Province, was established in 1965 and has long been a cornerstone of Papua New Guinea’s livestock industry. Initially developed to meet growing demand for beef and dairy products, the ranch leveraged the region’s temperate highland climate and fertile grazing land. With average temperatures between 16°C and 25°C and annual rainfall of about 2,500 mm, the area provides a suitable agro-ecological zone for livestock production.
Managed by the LDC since 1983, Zuguru sits on 661 hectares of flatland interspersed with an undulating hilly landscape throughout the ranch which has embraced modern farming practices while maintaining sustainable grazing systems. The ranch currently holds up to 366 cattle and 21 horses, and has since diversified its operations by introducing apiculture (71 hives) projects per government directives. It currently has beehives to support honey production and promote crop pollination. The management has undertaken a deliberate pasture improvement program on site after the ranch was reclaimed in 2020. Under the Marape Government’s livestock revitalization strategy, Zuguru is part of a broader plan to revitalize and transform all state-owned livestock assets. The ranch is served by eight permanent staff and six casual workers, contributing to local employment and community development.
This initiative aligns with the Medium-Term Development Plan IV (2023–2027), which aims to make PNG self-sufficient in meat production and thereby reducing our reliance on external imports of meat and meat products. Future plans for the ranch include expanding its beef cattle breeding program, introduction of dairy cattle, improving infrastructure, and creating structured supply chains for smallholder farmers.
Zuguru’s revitalization promises food security through a sustainable livestock production platform that contributes to the national economy.
